Continuing Competency Requirements Proposed Implementation
AB 120 was Chaptered into law and became effective January 1, 2007, adding Business and Professions Code (B&P) section 2676 to the Physical Therapy Practice Act. Section 2676 requires the Physical Therapy Board of California (Board) to establish by regulation criteria to implement the law for satisfying continuing competency requirements.
As a result, the Board appointed a task force charged to propose regulations specifying criteria to meet continuing competency requirements for license renewal of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.
The task force completed its charge and developed language that was adopted by the Board on May 1, 2008 and will be the subject of a public hearing at 10:00 a.m. on August 7, 2008 at the Department of Consumer Affairs, Hearing Room, located at 2005 Evergreen Street, Sacramento, California.
The language proposes to require 30 hours of continuing competency in each renewal cycle. To implement the regulation, those licenses that expire between October 31, 2010 and October 31, 2011, will be required to have completed 15 hours of continuing competency. For licenses that expire on and after November 1, 2011, the full 30 hours shall be completed. To view the entire text of the proposed language, please click here.
